Cangshan Dali
No updates for a few months, I know. I've been in Heilongjiang - opposite end of the country from Rock's territory. Here's a picture of the horse pool from the mountains above Dali.
Thanks John. Yes I did the same on the last trip. I've made two attempts since 1990 to walk up here from Dali town - both times I only got about 70% of the way! I posted some pics of the boardwalk etc somewhere else on this blog.
Dr Joseph Rock was an Austrian-American botanist who explored the Tibetan borderlands of Sichuan and Yunnan in the 1920s and 30s. This is about my travels to revisit the places he described in the National Geographic magazine. Any questions? contact me at beijingweek AT gmail

I've seen this one - but I cheated and caught a shiny new cable car in 2013.
There's a visitor centre and boardwalk there now !
