Kham then and now. A photoblog showing how eastern Tibet looked in the 1920s and how the same places and people look now. Based on the explorations of botanist Joseph Rock.

Then and now: Jambeyang, 1927 and 2012
The back of Jambeyang (South east face) as seen on the big kora round the three peaks of Yading.
Good day Mr Woodhead, I stumbled upon your blog while I was researching about Mt Cheresig. I'm planning to do the inner kora around Mt Cheresig this September. I've prepared myself physically and medicationally; Gingko Bilboa for acclimatization (No diamox in malaysia). I'm planning to do the bigger Kora and the only option i see it through a tour company, whistling arrow. With quite a hefty price tag, which i couldn't afford. Since sir you've done the Big Kora yourself, i would like to seek your advice on the following;
1) Can I start the Big Kora from the Riwa Village?
2) Can I hire a guide from Riwa village and if so, how much is it per day?
3) I have the basic hiking equipment, but is there equipment for rent in Riwa?
I'm travelling alone and I'll be doing the Yading kora in september. I'm really looking forward to this trip and I would be grateful Sir if you could give me some pointers.
Dr Joseph Rock was an Austrian-American botanist who explored the Tibetan borderlands of Sichuan and Yunnan in the 1920s and 30s. This is about my travels to revisit the places he described in the National Geographic magazine. Any questions? contact me at beijingweek AT gmail
