Kham then and now. A photoblog showing how eastern Tibet looked in the 1920s and how the same places and people look now. Based on the explorations of botanist Joseph Rock.
I stumbled across this photograph collection while researching my namesake, well sort of. My name is Joseph Rock, the third most famous person by that name according to Google :) although my name was coincidental, since although my mother has been a life long Natl. Geographic reader she did not recall him when I was christened. I've been interested in Dr. Rock the explorer for quite some time, but copies of his work are hard to come by in the states and usually come with a price tag in the hundreds of (US) dollars. This particular photo really speaks to me. Thanks for posting it.
Dr Joseph Rock was an Austrian-American botanist who explored the Tibetan borderlands of Sichuan and Yunnan in the 1920s and 30s. This is about my travels to revisit the places he described in the National Geographic magazine. Any questions? contact me at beijingweek AT gmail
