Kham then and now. A photoblog showing how eastern Tibet looked in the 1920s and how the same places and people look now. Based on the explorations of botanist Joseph Rock.
Greetings, I'm astonished by how little Westerners and more specifically Americans, know of Central Asia and the many explorations that occurred therein. In public school we study European trips to Africa and the various explorations to the New World but I recall nothing about Central Asia in spite of the fact that many explorers conducted expeditions to the region after 1890. I'm a professional historian and archaeologist, and, I consider myself to be well read; yet, I knew heard of Sven Hedin until I found his three volume treatment of Tibet at a flea market about 10 years ago. Since that time I have familiarized myself with the work of Dolen, Andrews, Schafer, Filchner, Duncan, and of course Rock. The work that these men did was extraordinary and it is unfortunate that few people in the English speaking world hear much about it. Your web site does of commendable service publicizing the life long efforts of an explorer of the same caliber and Henry M. Stanley.
Dr Joseph Rock was an Austrian-American botanist who explored the Tibetan borderlands of Sichuan and Yunnan in the 1920s and 30s. This is about my travels to revisit the places he described in the National Geographic magazine. Any questions? contact me at beijingweek AT gmail
